The three sessions and their character
Knowing the character of each session lets you choose when it makes sense to trade each asset:
• Asian session (Tokyo/Sydney): generally calmer moves; the yen, the Australian dollar, and at
times gold take the lead.
• London session: the most liquid of the day; the euro, the pound, and metals take the lead. It
often sets the trend for the day.
• New York session: high volatility; the dollar, U.S. indices, and gold take the lead, especially
around macro data.
The London–New York overlap: the golden window
The hours when the London and New York sessions coincide concentrate the highest volume of the
day and, often, the cleanest and most followed moves. For the Latin American trader, that window
usually falls in the morning or midday depending on the country. If you could only trade a few hours
a day, these would probably be the best.
Why trading off-hours costs you
Trading in the “dead hours” is not neutral: it has a real cost that adds up trade after trade.
• Wider spreads when liquidity is thin.
